After Vanderbilt’s death, the estate passed through several owners and most recently, it was home to Dowling College. After Dowling College went bankrupt in 2018 the mansion and its remaining 105 acres were purchased by Mercury International LLC of Delaware. Many of the outbuildings, like the clock tower, have since become residential homes, and the old tea house overlooking the river is now the aptly named ‘‘View’’ restaurant. Given that the first house had been built as a family hunting retreat, the second was designed to impress. The ballroom was decorated with 24-carat gold leaf, the stair hall was finished in prized carved Caen stone, and the oak library was retrofitted from a chateau in France.

Typical of the grand estates along the Hudson River, life at Hyde Park was rooted in the pleasures of the outdoors and genteel agrarian pursuits. House parties were leisurely and intimate, marked by games of golf or lawn tennis, carriage rides, and tea at neighboring estates. At Hyde Park, an extensive complex of greenhouses, formal gardens, and a model farm supplied flowers, produce, meats, and dairy for the Vanderbilt table wherever they were in residence.

From the late 1870s to the 1920s, the Vanderbilt family employed some of the best Beaux-Arts architects and decorators in the United States to build an unequaled string of townhouses in New York City and palaces on the East Coast of the United States. The Richard Hunt–designed abode was built in the Beaux Arts style for William and Alva and completed in 1882, but it was destroyed in a massive fire in 1899. The Vanderbilts’ French Renaissance–style home at 660 Fifth Avenue was built in 1882. While not “petit” at all by most standards, the residence was located just across the street from another Vanderbilt dwelling that occupied the entire city block on which it stood. Petit Château was also known as William K. Vanderbilt House, named for Cornelius’s grandson, for whom it was built.

Residents paid $70 a month to live in the commune, and in return shared chores, such as community gardening, that were intended to foster self-empowerment and self-reliance. Dome Village was particularly well-known for its architectural creativity; it consisted of a collection of twenty domes designed by architect Craig Chamberlain. Overlooking Northport Bay and the Long Island Sound, this Gold Coast mansion was the estate of William K. Vanderbilt II until his death in 1944. The Spanish Revival home, dubbed Eagle's Nest, is said to have been built by the New York City architecture firm of Warren & Wetmore—the same firm that designed and built Grand Central Terminal for William's great-grandfather Cornelius. The 250-room French Renaissance chateau includes a 90-foot-long Tapestry Gallery. McKim identified key furnishings for the hall, staircase, reception room, lobbies, dining room, living room and porticoes. Herter Brothers would carry out the architectural decoration of the entrance vestibule, the elliptical hall and the dining room and A. Ogden Codman would design Louise Vanderbilt’s suite, and Georges Glaenzer would design Mr. Vanderbilt’s bedroom, his office, the den, and the reception room.
No other Gilded Age mansion had descendants of the original families living in it and the Preservation Society wanted to keep capitalizing on that. As such, they allowed Gladys and Paul to continue living on the third floor even after their mother’s death. The manor homes and city seats were designed by prominent architects of the day and decorated with antiquities, furniture, and works of art from the world over. Consisting of a Queen Anne-style cottage, the initial home was designed by architectural firm Peabody and Stearns for tobacco tycoon Pierre Lorillard IV.

William’s wife, Alva, was deeply involved in the design of the home and opted for a balance of French Gothic architecture with Beaux Arts–style elegance. It was sold in 1926 to developers and subsequently demolished the following year. Hyde Park may be a small town, but there is so much to do during a visit to Vanderbilt Mansion, and the town Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt called home. With three national parks and the nation's first presidential library and museum, it will take more than a single day to see everything.
